Reflection for Friday 5 March 2021

Reading : Mark 15:25-32

" Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying 'Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!"

Utter defeat. Humiliation, suffering, helplessness.

Jesus hangs on the cross, hung between two criminals, the sign above him and crown on him marking his “kingship”.

Those walking by taunt him. Even the criminals being crucified with his deride him.

Nothing about the image shows hope, or power, or divine providence.

No wonder the disciples ran away............I want to turn away too, it’s too cruel...........I want to shout.......”come down Jesus, come down and show them whose boss!”

Punish those who have sentenced you to death.................the passersby, the soldiers, the criminals, Caiaphas, Pilate,.........forgetting of course that Jesus is also dying because of my sin...............and he will not come down............until sin and death are conquered.

Jesus refused to come down from the cross so that all will be lifted up by it, to show that nothing can separate us from the love of God.

“Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Oh were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Oh........... sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there?

Were you there when they nailed Him to the cross?

Were you there when they nailed Him to the cross?

Oh............... sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there ?

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, Have mercy on me a sinner.

Amen.
