Reflection for Wednesday 10 March 2021
Reading: Matthew 10:26-31
"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father”
God’s love and care for all of creation is more powerful and all encompassing that any of us can ever imagine. In the words of the children’s hymn,
“Our God is a great big God”
Or another one, “Our God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing that he cannot do!”
And yet, how often we project our own human limitations onto him? Especially, in terms of answering our prayers.
I’ve heard folks saying, “I don’t want to bother God”, or, He probably has much more difficult problems to deal with than mine” “He’s must be fed up with hearing me go on and on about the same thing”
The verse from Matthew’s gospel tells us otherwise.
God cares for us, even knowing the very hairs on our head.
The psalmist notes, every word we utter is known to God before we even speak it, each of our days numbered, written in God’s book.
Each person is valuable to God. This is what Jesus wants to communicate to us as he points to the sparrows which are sold for two for a penny.
These tiny creatures bought and sold for next to nothing are precious to God, and each one’s death noted.
How much more, therefore, does God care for each and every person?
POINTS TO PONDER
ARE YOU MINDFUL THAT GOD LOVES YOU SO MUCH THAT THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT YOU UNKNOWN TO HIM?
TAKE SOME TIME TODAY TO REMEMBER THAT ALL YOUR CONCERNS ARE GOD’S CONCERNS TOO.
THINK OF TIMES WHEN YOU HAVE FAILED TO NOTICE THE VALUE OR BEAUTY OF ONE OF GOD’S CREATURES
PRAYER
God, we give thanks for the two sparrows sold for two pennies, and for all the priceless people we encounter this day.
We thank you too for your unfailing love for us.
We give you our deepest concerns and our greatest hopes, knowing that you will take them, honour them, and mould them into something beautiful for and for us.
Amen.
